July 25, 2005: It was announced today the paper titled "The CF-18 Integrated Maintenance Training System - IMTS: The Future of Maintenance Training" has been accepted for both publication and presentation at I/ITSEC November 28 - December 1, 2005, in Orlando, Florida. The paper was co-authored by Gord Coulman, the Training Support Officer at the Canadian Forces F-18 training school at Cold Lake, Alberta, and Blake Melnick, the Vice President/Chief Knowledge Officer of Atlantis Systems International.

ABSTRACT

Moving Beyond Best Practice in Maintenance Training

Gord Coulman & Blake Melnick , 2005

While the practice of maintenance training has changed significantly over the past 10 years the increased complexity of aircraft systems, budgetary and time constraints suggest that we need to move beyond our current best practice models.

Simulation training systems offer an economical, effective means for training maintenance personnel to ensure the safe, trouble free operation of today’s increasingly complex systems found in military and commercial aircraft. The best of these systems employ high-fidelity computer simulations of aircraft systems and ground-based maintenance equipment and allow trainees a high degree of interactivity

Using the Integrated Maintenance Training System (IMTS) developed by Atlantis Systems International and deployed at Canadian Forces Training Facility in Cold Lake, Alberta as a case study, the paper compares the effectiveness of simulation-based maintenance training technology with traditional aircraft training methods, using the following criteria for comparison: Time to Train; Cost to Train; Costs to maintain, service and scale, and breadth and depth of training .

The paper concludes with a discussion around the possible future impact of simulated maintenance training technology within the military and commercial sectors. More specifically this section of the paper will address issues of diagnostics, performance assessment and the integration of simulation maintenance systems into classroom-based training.
