Integrated groundschool training solutions...

Atlantis: A Rich History In Training And Simulation

With a background in simulation and training for military, government, and civil applications, Atlantis constantly looks at new ways to improve the quality and affordability of training. With a successful 27+ year track record in building simulators and part-task trainers, it should not be surprising that Atlantis has developed a comprehensive understanding covering aircraft ground school training, where all of our legacy trainers are usually deployed. We're also constantly looking for training challenges, areas where Atlantis can excel with innovative training solutions, so a logical step for Atlantis was to integrate a total groundschool training solution for aircraft applications.

A New Atlantis: The Integrated Groundschool

In 2002 Atlantis became a member of the Allied Wings team, bidding for the new CFTS (Contracted Flying Training and Services) program, to deliver all of the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) ab-initio and advanced fixed and rotary wing flight training over a 20 year period. With fellow team members Kelowna Flightcraft, Canadian Helicopters, Canadian Base Operators and Pacific Coastal Aviation, Atlantis developed a state-of-the-art integrated groundschool solution for the new CFTS. Allied Wings competed and won the contract for CFTS in March, 2005, and is in the process of implementing the new training system, including buildings, air traffic control and aircraft as a complete turn-key solution. Atlantis also supports the DND's marketing efforts to bring international military customers to the Portage La Prairie training base.

Atlantis is responsible for integrating over 700 hours of courseware - computer aided instruction, SCORM level 2, 3 and 4 computer based training - with the Olé™ learning and content management environments. The courseware, together with level “D” full-flight simulators, several fixed-base simulators and desktop trainers, forms the nucleus of the new groundschool, operating within an integrated information environment, also provided by Atlantis. To ensure customer satisfaction and participation, Atlantis provides a state-of-the art collaborative development environment for the program's courseware suite, allowing the DND customers to actively participate in the design and development of this critical component, in real-time.

The program will be in a transitional development phase for two years, and will run steady-state for twenty years thereafter, and will provide ab-initio and advanced fixed and rotary wing flight training on commercial airframes such as the Grob 120, Beechcraft C-90B, Bell Jetranger, and Bell 412.

Key Partnerships and Strategic Alliances

Atlantis has deliberately set about the establishment of a set of key technology-based relationships, through the mechanism of teaming arrangements, alliances and partnerships, to be able to provide full training solutions, and to expand the breadth and depth of our aircraft platform support. Our overriding goal was to create a trustworthy and reliable pool of resources representing the "best of breed" in their respective areas, to enable the design and build of diverse training solutions.

The resources assembled by Atlantis include the following specialties:

  • Instructional Systems Design
  • Subject-matter expertise for fixed and rotary winged platform training
  • Learning and training information management
  • Courseware development
  • Learning content management and configuration control
  • Computer-based training content libraries
  • Full-motion, high-fidelity flight simulators
  • Fixed-base and desktop simulation-based training solutions
  • Mission rehearsal, briefing and de-briefing capabilities

Atlantis can draw on a significant pool of expertise to provide integrated schoolhouse solutions, in addition to our own simulation expertise: collectively, the Atlantis “team” has fielded over 15,000 hours of computer aided or computer based instruction, over 500 full-motion and fixed base flight simulators and over 50 hardware-based maintenance simulators into a multitude of flight and maintenance groundschools, worldwide.
